When Toyota redesigned the (third-gen) Tundra for 2022, it made some of the biggest changes in the truck’s history. The familiar V8 disappeared in favor of twin-turbocharged V6 engines (including the available i-Force Max hybrid). Paired with a 10-speed automatic, the new powertrains increased capability while allowing the Tundra to tow up to 12,000 pounds. The car company also replaced the traditional leaf springs with a coil-spring rear suspension for a smoother ride.

A standard 8-inch touchscreen is for lower trims, while upper trims get a 14-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and enhanced voice recognition. Toyota added Safety Sense 2.5 across the board.

The second-gen Tundra was in production for well over a decade. Later trucks are especially attractive because they combine Toyota’s 5.7-liter V8 with many of the convenience and safety features found on newer pickups.

After a big 2014 refresh, Toyota continued updated styling inside and out, including a redesigned infotainment system. Toyota expanded the lineup again in 2015 with the introduction of the TRD Pro, while 2018 models gained standard Safety Sense-P.

Shoppers looking for the lowest prices can also consider first-gen Tundras. Although they can’t tow as much as newer models, they’re still very capable and helped establish Toyota’s reputation in the full-size pickup segment.

Built from 2016 through 2023, the third-generation Tacoma offers modern safety features and technology without the higher prices of the latest redesign. At this time, Toyota offered both Access Cab and Double Cab configurations with two bed lengths. Buyers could choose between a 2.7-liter four-cylinder or the far more popular 3.5-liter V6, while trim levels ranged from the basic SR to the off-road-ready TRD Off-Road and range-topping TRD Pro.

Safety Sense was added to all trims in 2018. A 2020 refresh included standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and a larger touchscreen. A power driver’s seat and Multi-Terrain Monitor also became available on higher trims.

The Tacoma now features a turbocharged 2.4-liter across the lineup with an available 326 hp i-Force Max delivering 465 lb-ft. There’s a standard 8-inch touchscreen, but higher trims upgrade to a 14-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and optional wireless charging.
